Jianping Chen is a Distinguished Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Chief Scientist of the National 973 Program. As the principal investigator, he has led and completed over 20 major national and ministerial research projects. These include grants from the National 973 Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (encompassing Key Programs, Major Research Instrumentation Programs, and International Cooperation Key Programs), the National/Defense 863 Program, and the Shanghai Municipal Government (such as sub-projects of the Silicon Photonics Major Program).

Dr.Chen has authored more than 400 research papers in prestigious international journals in optics and photonics, including Light: Science & Applications, Optica, Nature Communications, and IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology. He holds over 100 invention patents granted in the United States, Europe, and China. His significant contributions to research and education have been recognized with several awards, notably the National Teaching Achievement Award, and Science and Technology Progress/Technology Invention Awards from the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Government.

Dr.Chen has held prominent academic and administrative positions, including serving as a member of the 7th Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. At Shanghai Jiao Tong University, his leadership roles included Director of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Director of the "211/985 Project" Office, Secretary-General of the University Academic Committee, and Director of the Planning and Development Division. He also served as Secretary-General of the Shanghai Institute of Electronics. Furthermore, he has contributed to the academic community as an editorial or guest board member for several journals, including IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Micromachines, and ZTE Communications.
